Sending Credit Repair Letters
Once you are behind in your monthly payments the odds are that your failure to meet the payments will be reported to one of the credit reporting agencies. They in turn make your credit history available to anyone that you go to when applying for credit. Your credit score will determine what your interest rate will be when buying a car or a home. In some cases it can also determine whether or not you are considered for a job. When you are aware that a mark has been placed against your credit, your first move should be to send credit repair letters to the company (ies) that have listed you as having bad credit. When they have reviewed the letter and see that you are willing to work with them you will start to rebuild your credit.
You may write a credit repair letter on your own or you can do what many people do and that is to search out credit repair sample letters on the Internet. Whichever avenue you take, there are certain items that must be included. You must tell them what information in your report you believe to be inaccurate. If you have any documentation that supports your claim send copies of it with your credit repair letter. If more than one item is being disputed identify each separately. Then state the facts that support why you think it is wrong. Ask for them to either correct or remove the item from your report, whichever is appropriate. It is often a good idea to include a copy of your report with the disputed items circled. Always include your complete name and address so that they can get back to you.
Send your credit repair letters by certified mail with a return receipt requested included. This will provide you with proof of the date and time you submited your request and the date and time they received it.
There are companies that will prepare your credit repair letters for you and charge you a large fee. You can always find free credit repair letters to download from the Internet or you can write your own from scratch. Following the samples is good in that you have less of a chance of omitting one of the key points that are needed. The downside is that the letter is not yours and may include statements that do not apply to your case. Remember they are samples and should be treated as such.
